کوششهایی که جهت درک و پیشگیری از تولد زودرس و کندی رشد داخلی رحمی (۱) به عمل آمده، منجر به توسعه بررسی خطرات قبل از تولد شده است. این بررسی ها در زمینه مراقبت های قبل از تولد انجام می گیرد. با این وجود، در این بررسی ها به بعضی از عوامل خطر که به سادگی قابل شناسایی هستند، توجه نشده است، یکی از این موارد، وزن خود مادر به هنگام تولد است.
